Hey, hey!
I hope your weekend was full of fun and both time outside enjoying the sun, but also time inside away from the sun. This is definitely the hottest weekend of the summer and the pool hardly offers any relief! Let’s just say its been a sweaty, sun block and chlorine soaked kind of weekend!
The time that wasn’t spent in the heat was spent out and about with Russ. After work on Friday, we ate dinner with my family– stuffed tomatoes, rice and salad, followed by a homemade key lime pie for dessert. My mom knows how to do it! Russ and I spent the rest of the night catching up on season 5 of Breaking Bad. We started the series a year ago and it is completely addicting. We’re almost all caught up for the beginning of the new season this summer!! I’m so excited 🙂
Saturday morning was yet another early morning for me. Russ and I decided to start our marathon training this weekend, so we wanted to get an early start. We went to the gym together yesterday and the heat was almost unbearable.
Anyway, I woke up, but when I went to wake up Russ, he gave me a look that indicated that he wasn’t getting up anytime soon, so I went downstairs for breakfast and to start working on dough for cranberry-ginger scones for Sunday’s brunch! Early mornings are my favorite time of the day- when everyone is still asleep and the house is peaceful. I made myself a big, filling breakfast figuring we would do our run in a couple of hours, in the midday heat.Oatmeal with oat bran and a rainbow of fruit: strawberries, peach, banana, mint leaves, blueberries and a couple fig slices, all topped off with vanilla almond milk. So filling, so good. After breakfast, I got to work on the scones until Russy was ready to get up. Scones are actually pretty simple to make, as most of the work is done by the blender. When the dough was ready, I put it in the fridge and Russ and I headed out for our first run of marathon training. Since the marathon isn’t for another five months, we only tackled five miles, but that was plenty because it was SO HOT. We stopped for water five times and took it very slowly! Next week, we have seven miles planned and we’re going earlier…
Of course, as usual, the rest of the day was spent at the pool, but Russ stopped by and hung out with me for the last two hours of work. I love having visitors! Work goes by so much faster when my friends or family come by. I actually got out of work a little early because Russ and I had a special date planned for Saturday night! This whole weekend, as part of the Wawa Welcome America festival, there was the Taste of Philadelphia Food Festival at Penn’s Landing! It wasn’t anything that we expected it to be (a.k.a lots of cool vendors- cultural, vegan, vegetarian, etc.). It was actually a lot of carnival food (fries, funnel cake, cheese steaks, chicken) and just a few vendors and food trucks, which was really disappointing! All of the interesting food, like Maui tofu rolls, were sold out. Rookie mistake: we bought $10 worth of tickets and then realized we didn’t want any of that food. Luckily, Russ was able to sell them to people so we got our money back.
Since we still needed to eat, we headed over to Prime Stache, a rustic burger bar right off of Penn’s Landing. I ordered the fish tacos and Russ ordered a burger, as well as an order of meatball sliders for an appetizer. Rookie mistake #2: the meatballs had pork in them, which I found out while I was chewing a bite of one. I don’t eat pork, so Russ enjoyed them by himself.
I loved the fish tacos- they were really fresh tasting and the perfect size. We liked the restaurant and both agreed that it was a much better choice than any of the food at the festival.
We finished eating right in time to see the fireworks show over the water, which was awesome! We were pretty far away from the fireworks on the fourth, so this was a special treat. They looked like they were right in front of us.We made the long walk back to the train station and hopped on a train around 11. I was wiped when we got back, but I agreed to watch another episode of Breaking Bad. We’re on a mission to finish season five!
Sunday morning we had Sunday Brunch, but this novel is getting too long so that will be next!
