As you know, I just got back from a 3 week stay in Santiago, Chile and during that time, I was staying in an Airbnb. I am no Airbnb newbie, but this was my first long stay (more than 5 days) in one and there are certain items that I thought would have made my stay more comfortable. I kept a note in my phone so that I could share it here and check back myself, or maybe it can be helpful for you! All of these are things that would be helpful for a long stay in an Airbnb, but for any stay!
Things That Make Your Long-Stay Airbnb More Comfortable
- Slippers or Flip Flops – something to wear at home so that you can kick off the shoes you’ve been wearing all day and have something comfortable to wear at ‘home’
- Thick socks for cold locations – Santiago was FREEZING and my favorite thing to do at night and early in the morning was put on thick, warm socks
- A small bottle of laundry detergent – we had to buy a huge bottle of detergent just to do 2 loads of laundry. Buy one of those small travel-sized containers that you likely won’t find in other countries. Maybe bring a couple of dryer sheets.
- Decent dissolvable coffee, or your own espresso maker and espresso – having a slow morning coffee is one of my favorite things anywhere in the world and while it’s likely I will stop along the way and get one while out and about, I also need a strong cup while at the Airbnb and there is nothing worse than $hitty powdered coffee or, even worse, agua de culo from a drip coffee maker. Bring a small container of good dissolvable coffee (like Trader Joe’s brand, or Nestle Gold) or do what my Mom does- bring a small 1 cup espresso maker and espresso.
- Your favorite condiment – I bought peanut butter my first day in Santiago, but it wasn’t good. I wish I had brought Trader Joe’s peanut butter.
- Your favorite beauty products – I used to be all about using hotel-sized beauty products that I got free here or there, but I have learned over the years that the key to feeling good while on vacation is to keep using your favorite products (shampoo, conditioner, soaps, lotions, make up, makeup remover, hair products)
- Plastic ziplocks for snacks and clothes – bring small ziplocks for sandwiches and snacks, and bigger ones for dirty clothes. I bought little containers of honey and my roommate had extra ziplocks she gave me to carry them home. Couldn’t have done it without her!
- A small weekend getaway bag – you will probably take weekend trips during your longer trip and you won’t want to bring your whole suitcase, so bring a small duffel.
Happy travels!
