A Day in Segovia

Since I only had plans for the first half of Semana Santa, I really wanted to take advantage of the open days of the second half of the week and do some exploring.  I had never been to Segovia, even though it’s an easy day trip from Madrid, so I dragged Luis and we went for the day!  (More like the afternoon 😉 ).DSC_0086

I had heard that Segovia was great, but for a day trip, Toledo is better.  So with all of that, I wasn’t expecting to be as impressed as I was!  There was so much to see and I loved all of the little streets, strolling around the Alcazar and seeing the Aqueduct.  I don’t know what I expected with the aqueduct, but it was absolutely incredible- so big!!  And it’s incredible that it was made so long ago with no cement.  That’s some impressive engineering!

We arrived right around lunch time and headed straight to El Fogon Sefardi, where we had a reservation.  It’s part of a hotel, and I would have probably never chosen it on my own, but I thought the food was awesome.  My parents highly recommended it when they were in Segovia, and raved about the Sefardic-inspired restaurant.DSC_0020  (hehe^^) Luis was skeptical that it would be “touristy”, but my parents are picky restaurant-goers, so I trusted them. 😉

We shared the Sephardic Menu del Dia, which started with a really tasty salad full of interesting fruits:DSC_0017That fruit in the middle?  Ate the entire thing and it tasted both sweet and like I was chewing on some leaves haha.

And these little stuffed-phyllo triangles that were delicious!!!  On the menu, they are called “surtido de filikas sefardis”DSC_0013They’re quite pricey on the menu, so better to get them as part of the menu del dia!

We also added this eggplant/ veggie/ crumbled lamb (it’s popular there) stack with a dressing.  I thought it was a bit sweet.DSC_0016

For the main course, we chose the lamb-tajine, which was so good.  It was heavy, but really flavorful and tender.  I’m not a lamb person, but this was too good.DSC_0023

We also ordered the revuelto con bacalao y almendras tostadas, which is scrambled eggs with white fish and almonds.  Also so good and so filling!  I only had a few bites…DSC_0021

And when we weren’t full enough, the menu del dia came with a healthy slice of cake.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the cake, but who can say no to chocolate?DSC_0028

Once we were incredibly full, we spent the next few hours exploring every inch of Segovia.  From the Alcazar –> the aqueduct –> the small winding streets and moreDSC_0031 DSC_0043 DSC_0053 seg1 DSC_0081-001 DSC_0084 DSC_0108 DSC_0115 DSC_0118 DSC_0122 DSC_0131 DSC_0137 DSC_0134 DSC_0151

We got back to Madrid around 9pm and I was asleep by 9:05.  I woke up at 2 am starving, ate a rice cake with cheese, and went back to bed for a dreamy 13 hours of sleep 🙂
