Another Week in Malaga

Luis and I just got back from a week long amazing road trip through the north of Spain, but before I share that, I need to back up and quickly write about our incredible time in Malaga.

Looking back, I was just in Malaga in June, but it’s one of our favorite beach spots and so easy to get to thanks to the 3 hour AVE train and of course, having access to an apartment makes things easier.  But besides that, we love the beach, the town, being able to visit nearby beaches, and during this last trip, the FERIA (fair).  We always talked about going to Malaga during the feria, but this was the first year we made it happen and, oh my gosh, it was so much fun.  Spanish fairs have got NOTHING on American fairs.  The number of rides, the blasting music, the flamenco dances, the traditional food stops, and the incredible abundance of alcohol- it was truly something I have never experienced in my life.visit malaga

These days, the fair is this HUGE party with tons of rides and lights and music, a million places to eat, and a huge row of nightclubs that go until 7 am, but the origins weren’t always just a place to party.  visit malaga

The origin of the feria comes from August 19, 1487 when Malaga was reconquered added to the Castillian crown by the Catholic kings.  In 1491, these celebrations coincided with the celebrations of a one of the churches and since then, there have been huge parties that last over 12 days. We spent two nights at the feria, mostly eating, drinking, and enjoying the nightclubs, and on one night we went on the scariest ferris wheel of my life.visit malaga

Look how afraid Iook! Side note: I have never seen such unsafe rides in my life!  They had one ride called “la olla” which was a ride that tilts on it’s side while a bunch of kids try to keep their balance while it spins, but had these metal bars that are just a broken teeth accident waiting to happen.  And then there was the flying ship that you always see at amusement parks, but instead of being in seats, the people were IN CAGES! Standing! All part of the experience though 😉visit malaga

The rest of the week was spent at the beach, a day in Torre del Mar where we had the most delicious fresh fish lunch, and spending time with Sarah and Oswaldo who came to visit!  We were only there for 5 days, but we fit a whole lot in.
