Friday Five: Five Differences Between Madrid and Philadelphia: Style

You’re going to talk about FASHION”  “Do us a favor and DON’T”IMG_2684-001

Relaaaaaax.  I’m just pointing out similarities and differences.

Happy Friday!IMG_2741And Happy SPRING BREAK (for those of us in Madrid…).  How was your week?  Mine flew by in the blink of an eye since Spring Break started Thursday morning and some of my private classes got cancelled earlier in the week.  I had plenty of time to relax, wander, walk, and do whatever.IMG_2749 IMG_2734 IMG_2727

I don’t have any concrete plans for the next three days, but Monday morning, I leave bright and early for Lisboa, Portugal on a little solo getaway!!!  Send happy and sunny vibes my way as the weather inevitably changed to stormy and rainy AS SOON AS I bought my ticket.  My luck.  Then on Friday, I’m off to Paris!!!  Should be an exciting week. 😉

Anyway, for this week’s Friday Fives, I’m talking about something I have no rights to talk about…fashion/ style and how things are a little different here compared to Philadelphia.

1 // Rolled jeans.IMG_2753Now that the weather is warming up, I am seeing ankles everywhere.  It’s kind of hard to see it in that photo, but those girls have their pants rolled.  I promise.  This picture also shows the dark pant/ white shoe combo that happens mucho here.  It’s totally a style for younger people to make tiny rolls with their jeans so that you just see their ankles.  Usually done with sneakers.  In Philly, people roll their jeans, but usually make bigger rolls and nooooot with sneakers, for the most part.

2 // Blanket scarves.Blnket scarf In the winter, spotting girls in these HUUUUGE scarves was like looking for hanging pig legs (ie: everywhere).  Blanket scarves are exactly what their name implies: blankets, that are wrapped and wrapped and wrapped.  I don’t own one, but they look super comfy.

3 // Heavier makeup.Makeup This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think a much higher percentage of females wear heavy (and strong) makeup here than in Philadelphia.  I mean bright, red lips, dark eyes, and heavy powder use.  Usually it looks good, but it’s not a look I could get away with.  It’s also common to see it on young-ish girls, which is less common in the U.S.

4 // Wedding rings.wedding This is just something that I have picked up on when I ride the metro, but I noticed that women don’t usually wear extravagant wedding/ engagement rings.  Matter of fact, I haven’t seen any engagement rings- only basic wedding bands.  I think in the U.S., it’s much more common to see an extravagant diamond ring, but not so common here.

5 // Platform, shiny shoes.platform  When I first arrived in Madrid, I thought some of the fashion choices were…questionable, but since then, most of them have grown on me.  The chronic use of platform shoes has not grown on me and I don’t think it ever will.  It’s awwwwful and EVERYWHERE.
