Bagels at the Beach

It’s the last day of August so it’s a great day to write a short recap of our yearly trip to the beach before fall sweeps in and the time in the sun and sand becomes a far off memory. I’m not going to lie – I am extremely ready for fall and everything that comes with it – cooler temps for one, but also a new “year” and the renewed energy that we all have at the beginning of the school year.

Luis was there for an entire weekend before I headed down on Tuesday and as soon as I arrived, we hit the ground running and locked ourselves out of the car garage where the keys were in the car (but not in a locked car, thank goodness). All’s well that ends well and it was fine after some nice neighbors unlocked the garage door for us (after various unfriendly neighbors refused to help). It kicked things off on an interesting note!

Tuesday night was chill – just Luis and me, ordering way too much food for just two people. Luis housed like 85 chicken wings… it was impressive. Ok, not 85, but it was a lot.

On Wednesday and Thursday, Luis had to work so I went down to the beach and watched the people and the waves while we waited for our friends, Emma and David, to join us!

They showed up around lunch time so we ate a snack and then while the `people that had to work kept working, I kept not-working at the beach 😉

Late Wednesday night, our other good friends, Jess and Fede arrived from Madrid and we went out to dinner and drinks at Bagazo, and then played on the zipline on the beach. Ok, I was the one playing on the zipline and then the boys joined me — can’t pass up a good playground structure! And there were no kids to fight off of it…normally there are kids all over it!

Thursday was more of the same – most people working and I was not working (big boss problems 😉 ). I went for a run with David, and then a few of us went down to the beach.

Friday we spent the day at another beautiful beach near Marbella and then ended the day in the most perfect summer way – a picnic on the beach as the sun set on the other side.

Saturday we spent the morning in Mijas which was really beautiful. We had breakfast there and then walking around, meandering in and out of the little shops. We also did a photoshoot with a bagel and my friends were real troopers humoring me.

it means live, feel, and love freely (as seen through the eye of a bagel)

On Saturday night, we went to the Malaga Feria and it was an absolute locura like it was last time we went. Locura in a good way, but wow! Hundreds of thousands of people, casetas built up out of nothing, enormous open-air nightclubs. We were there til almost 4 am (the party keeps going until at least 8 am) but we are OLD. Before we headed home, we had some entirely-too-healthy-for-4am stuffed potatoes (like, who wants carrots and beets inside a stuffed potato at 4 in the morning???? Where was the nacho cheese? And the jalapeños? Maybe some sour cream? If we must add a vegetable, may I suggest corn?) And some churros with chocolate to have enough energy to fight the crowds in the taxi line. Perks of going home “early” like old people was that the line was short…just other people with little kids and elderly people lol.

On Sunday, we all pitched in to clean the apartment and then the girls made a lovely breakfast with almost every scrap that was left in the fridge. Amazing how you can have “nothing to eat” and turn it into something like this.

I don’t have the same ganas to write long posts like I used to, but it is nice to have some sort of record of the things that have happened.

I feel grateful for friends that make vacation feel like a week at the beach with family.

Talk soon!
