Gin & Tonic Diaries: 5 Things

Hello from me and my gin & tonic (yes I know it’s my gin & tonic and me)! I am coming at you because a very special reader asked when I would be posting next, so here we are!

I have just poured myself a gin & tonic, let’s say, “for research” for our new drink menu 😉 Or maybe I poured myself a gin & tonic because it’s Monday at 8 pm, the world is ending, and why wouldn’t I have a gin & tonic?  This particular glass is made with ice cubes, lemon rind (that I ran around the rim of the glass), gin, tonic, juniper berries and cardamom seeds.  We actually ARE planning to offer gin & tonics at the bakery, so this is great practice.  I can’t sell something I don’t consume myself, RIGHT?!

As I am typing this, I hear lots of clapping, howling, screaming, and sirens because every night at 8pm, Spaniards head out to their balconies and terraces to clap for the medical workers across the country who are fighting this virus.  I went out and clapped for a minute because I actually do enjoy seeing everyone come together, and also, it gives me a good opportunity to get a peek at our neighbor on the right who I have never met!  He sticks his head out the window every night at 8 pm, like a groundhog.

I’m here to tell you a few things in five thing series- let’s get started!

5 Things I Did Today:

  • cleaned the entire house- wiped everything down, swept, watered plants, AND mopped.  I hate mopping so this is a big deal.
  • organized one of the kitchen cabinets that has been holding food that expired in 2018.  We put some food up there that we got as gifts during Thanksgiving 2017 and then never ate it…one of those things was a panetone from Italy (looks like a giant muffin) and when I opened it, it still looked perfect…3 years later. We put these things in our bodies?!
  • hunted and gathered food (aka went to the grocery store and for fresh air) for a couple hours.  it was nice.
  • organized orders for next weekend (already coming in!)
  • worked on our budget report for the shop…which is looking very, very sad.

5 Things I Plan to Do Tonight:

  • eat the dinner I just made (fried rice with scallions, baked tofu, sauteed eggplant)
  • work on my website a little bit…I am feeling a little bored with our current site, so thinking I might give it a refresh
  • watch netflix
  • finish my gin & tonic
  • I sort of want to paint…maybe I can convince Luis to paint with me!

5 Things I Plan to Do Tomorrow:

  • work on our new drinks menu.  Duh! hence the research tonight
  • organize another cabinet…chipping away at it!
  • send the invoices for our coffee mugs to the coffee company which has been on my to-do list for-ev-er
  • make a “bagel of the week” document full of ideas
  • food prep some things for the week

5 Things I am Looking Forward to Doing When This is Over:

  • going for a run
  • going out for cañas and tapas
  • seeing friends in public
  • opening our shop again!!!
  • seeing my family

5 Restaurants/ Cafes/ Bars I Want to Try:

  • Hermanas Arce (a homey-looking cafe/coffee shop)
  • Dot Cafe Bar (a cool, hipster coffee shop)
  • Barganzo (a new kosher restaurant that opened in Madrid and has great reviews!)
  • Kitchen154 (Thai fusion place that is very popular)
  • La Monarracha (new Japanese fusion place that opened across from the bagel shop)

That is all!  See you next time with another cocktail.
