Last Madrid Weekend (for awhile)

summer Madrid

Hello, hello and Happy MONDAY!

Today is an exciting day because it’s the day I will present my COMPLETE Bruja’s Bakery Business Plan presentation to a panel of professors.

I am a bit nervous, but I have been practicing all weekend (in between pool time and going out a bit, of course 😉 ) so I feel like it will be fine.  Also, I know they are not “out to get us” so I’m not worried about any difficult questions.  Actually, I am most worried about them trying my bagels.  I am bringing a sample of bagels to try and it’s always nervewracking to sit in front of people while they try my bagels.  Anyway, that’s later today so for now, I’ll share my weekend!

The title says “Last Madrid Weekend” because this time next week, I will be in Santiago, Chile!  I am going with CIEE (the same program I worked for last summer in Madrid) and although I am nervous about how it will go, I am also excited.  I am sad to leave Madrid and Luis, but I am very excited to see my parents for a few days (heading home for 2 days before Chile) and getting to have a BBQ- haha, I am SO excited for grilled food!  This was my last weekend here and in between practicing the presentation, we had a lot of fun.

FRIDAY

On Friday, I had to finish baking a couple of challahs and colorful bagels and I mis-judged how long it would take so I actually didn’t finish until close to 8:30 (thought it would be more like 6:30- oops!).Bruja's Bakery Madrid

So Luis came home from work, we worked a bit on my presentation, and then we headed out for drinks.  We took bikes into the center (yes, it was still light out Mom…doesn’t get dark until after 10 and Friday was the summer solstice)…. (side note: the summer solstice always makes me a little sad because it’s like the height of the summer is already over….depressing!).  So we took bikes into the center and went to a Mexican joint that Luis found that is known for their amazing tacos, but their tacos were NOT amazing and I actually found them to be quite disgusting.

They have the kitchen windows covered by paper, but we snuck a peak and realized why they cover their windows… haha.

After our mediocre tacos and delicious Michelada, we went to a great bar that we had been to before for some beers and a shared tosta con ventresca y pimineto.  Lets call this: Bar Food You Would Never Ever Ever See in America.

I was pooped and had to be up early Saturday, so that was that.

SATURDAY

Saturday morning started with an early alarm because I have 54 bagels and a pumpkin pie to make before 11 am (for 3 different customers).Bruja's Bakery

I actually finished earlier than expected, so I used the quiet morning time to start switching my agenda over to my new one.

I love these pocket-sized agendas and have been using them for years and there is something so refreshing about switching to a new one.  I keep all of my old agendas because I like to look back and see what life was like (also: I am so NOT a hoarder, but I do hoard these).

So I made the switch and then Luis went to do my deliveries (haha) and then we went for a run and did NTC in the HEAT!  It was so hot out, but the workout was good.  Afterwards, we got ready and headed to his parents for lunch….his Mom is a little suspicious as to why I haven’t been for lunch in many weeks but suddenly show up now that their amazing pool is open (haha, she caught me…).  We spent about an hour at the pool and were both uncomfortably warm, so we packed up and went to do the weekly grocery haul…. first from the tree and then the supermarket 😉picking fruit

Luis went to do another delivery while I stayed back preparing some food (a wheatberry-corn salad and a phyllo dough quiche).  Both are already consumed!

We had grand plans to do something fun on Saturday night, but by 11 pm, I knew that we weren’t going anywhere and I was asleep by 12!  PARTAY!

SUNDAY

Since I fell asleep so early on Saturday, I was up early on Sunday (which I actually love) and used the time to clean the disgusting apartment.  Nothing gives me more peace than an organized and CLEAN apartment (Mom, that apple didn’t fall too far….).  Luis did his half once he woke up and now the place is nice and sparkley.  I also made some bagel dough, made these purple smoothies (frozen blueberries, 1 banana, 2 tubs yogurt, about a half cup of oats, 2 Tbs chia seeds, and lots of milk- blended).

Once we finished the chores, we headed out for a 45 minute HOT run and then came back, showered and got dressed and went to the POOL!  This is the neighborhood pool near Luis’ house and we went because they were having their annual party with blow-up slides, but we didn’t get to go on them because they closed it down an hour and a half early – bummer!  The pool was AMAZING though.

Sunday night brought a lot of presentation practice, a big salad for dinner, laundry, and me curling into bed early to read a book my brother gave me an I’m obsessed.

Now I’m off to tackle Monday!  Planning to practice my presentation 3 times before this afternoon, start packing for Chile (should be fun because I only get to bring 22 pounds on the Madrid-US flight (thanks Norweigan!), and go to the market for some produce.  Talk soon!

Oh, and because I never got to share, this was dinner last week at Sushita Café with my friends (and brother) who are all leaving Madrid FOREVER!  It was so sad, but I feel so grateful to have found them this year.  I kept saying to Luis that this is the first year I really felt like I had a ‘group’ and not just random friends.  Sad they’re leaving, but excited for their futures!  And also VERY happy we all live around Philly 😉
