Looking Forward to Santiago, Chile

As I’ve mentioned in the last few posts, I am going to be heading to Santiago de Chile for a 3 week trip with a group of American students.  The students are doing a cultural immersion program and learning all about entrepreneurship (actually, they are learning a very simplified version of what I learned all year in my business course) and I will be there to help them with their project, make sure they show up to class, go to activities with them, and reap all the benefits of being paid to be in Chile 🙂  All jokes aside, I am very much looking forward to the trip and think it’s awesome that I get paid to go to another country that I may have not gotten to on my own… flights are over $1000!  What I am not really (at all) looking forward to is the fact that American Airlines is  showing me that there are no free seats available on our overnight flight, meaning that I’m probably going to get a middle seat squished between two less-than-fun seatmates.  Maybe I can convince one of the students to switch with me 😉

When I was in high school, I went on a couple of these chaperoned summer trips with a whole bunch of other students and it’s funny for me to think back on how we thought the “counselors” knew everything about everything and now I’m realizing…guess what?  We don’t know squat!  We are all going to figure it out together.

I’ve been reading some blogs about living in Chile and learning some things to do, what I should eat, and where to go.  Reading blogs helps me organize myself and more than anything, get excited!

I’m excited to visit the Bellavista neighborhood, hike the Santa Lucia Hill, visiting a winery (not sure if this is possible), visiting the Central Market (it looks like the markets in Spain!), see La Moneda Palace, Cerro Santa Lucia, visit the PLaza de Armas.

I am going to try Pastel de Choclo, which is a pie made with sweet corn, olives, eggs, and chicken and beef.  Also the Churrasco Sandwich, as long as it’s beef or chicken (even though I actually think it looks disgusting).  Mote con huesillo sounds like something I won’t enjoy, since it looks very sweet, but I would give it a try if it’s still available in the cooler months.  There are so many other things to try- the lists are endless, but I’ll be sure to share it all with you!

See you from the other side- pray for my window seat!
